ISEE: Grades 5 - 12

Independent School Entrance Exam

About the ISEE

The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is a three-hour admission test for entrance into grades five through twelve. The ISEE has three levels: a Lower Level for students currently in grades four and five who are candidates for admission to grades five and six, a Middle Level for students in grades six and seven who are candidates for admission to grades seven and eight, and an Upper Level for students in grades eight to eleven who are candidates for admission to grades nine through twelve.

Features & Benefits

The ISEE consists of carefully constructed and standardized verbal and quantitative reasoning tests that measure a student’s capability for learning, and reading comprehension and mathematics achievement tests that provide specific information about an individual’s strengths and weaknesses in those areas. All levels include a timed essay written in response to an assigned topic. The essay is not scored, but a copy is forwarded to the recipient schools along with the Individual Student Report, which shows scaled scores, percentiles, and stanines.

The ISEE may only be taken once within a six-month period. It can only be taken when making a formal application to a school. Practice administrations are not allowed.

Who wrote the ISEE and when was it developed?

The ISEE was written by ETS with the help of ERB faculty members. The second edition of the test, the one in use today, was released in 1999.

When do I sign up to give the ISEE?

An email is sent to all ERB member schools in the spring, but you may sign up at any point in the year. The deadline to have your school listed in the ISEE Student Guide is May 4th.

How quickly will I receive my scores?

Scores are generated as early as the Monday after a Saturday exam and released by mail and electronically within the day of scoring. Most schools receive scores within 5 business days of testing.

Will our staff be paid for administering the ISEE?

Yes, ERB pays an honorarium to the supervisors, administrators, non-standard administrators, and proctors.

What is the cost of the ISEE for a family?

The cost for the 2006-07 season is $78.

Are there fee waivers available for families in need of financial assistance?

Yes, ERB offers Ben D. Wood fee waivers to ISEE test site schools. Last year, ERB distributed approximately $250,000 in fee waivers to member schools and organizations.

Advantages of Using ISEE

Advantages (for admission offices):

  • The ISEE is a well-constructed testing instrument written especially for admission evaluation by independent school teachers under the guidance of Educational Testing Service. The ISEE is a secure instrument that is kept under lock and key.
  • Registration and scoring are handled by the ISEE Operations Office in Durham, North Carolina. The Operations Office sends you the testing materials already organized by testing rooms.
  • Test scores are available to ISEE test site schools electronically the Monday after a Saturday exam – at no charge to the ISEE test site school. Hard copies are mailed and received within five to seven business days of the test administration.
  • You determine the date of your testing(s); we do not determine these dates.
  • Comprehensive reports allow administrators to use the ISEE as both a placement tool as well as an admission test. The student’s score report may be used by a school as a placement tool as well as an admission test.
  • Because of the flexibility in establishing test dates, the ISEE is the perfect test for a group of schools in a geographic area. Consortium testing usually means:
    • A group of schools uses the ISEE as the main test required of applicants. (They may also be sent to non-consortium schools.)
    • Schools take turns serving as test sites.
    • Schools share the cost of advertising for admission testing.
    • Consortium testing dates are listed in the ISEE Student Guide and online.
    • Consortium testing eases the application process for families.
    • ERB offers personal service. We respond to phone calls quickly and check in regularly with our voice mail and email in our NYC and North Carolina offices.

Advantages for a family:

  • A student has to take only ONE test that will be accepted by almost every independent school in the United States.
  • The registration fee of $78.00 covers the test, a detailed score report showing a student’s reasoning vs. achievement on the ISEE, and the option of having this report sent to six schools as well as the parents. (More schools may be designated as score recipients for a small fee: $15.00 per 6.)
  • If the test fee is a hardship for a family, ERB provides fee waivers to ISEE test site schools to distribute to families in need. In the 2006-07 season, ERB waived almost $250,000 in testing fees to families in need.
  • Our ISEE staff offers personal service to parents, and will answer any questions they have from registration to interpretation.

Become a Test Site

Why become a test site?

There are many advantages to becoming an ISEE test administration site. ERB offers test sites Ben D. Wood fee waivers at no fee to the school, to be given to families in need of financial assistance. In addition, ERB will help coordinate and test your students who reside in a part of the country or the world where the ISEE is not offered by offering domestic and international remote testing options. Also, by being a test site, you offer your school as a testing option to families who may not have otherwise visited your campus and viewed your facilities. Many times, testers become applicants after a positive testing experience.

ISEE allows your school to select the date(s) of choice. Some schools work within a consortium and coordinate their testing dates to compliment the dates of the others schools with the designated area. Some schools like to offer the test once a year, others offer it once a month. ISEE allows the school to select the dates, the frequency of testing, the number of students who can be tested, and the check-in and start-time of testing. At any point during the testing season, additional testing dates may be added. To inquire further about signing up to be an ISEE test site, please email isee@erbtest.org.

How does my school become a test site?

To become a test site, the school must be an ERB member. On the day of testing, the school must be a neutral test site (no admissions activities can take place that day), and the school must administer the test as stated in the ISEE Supervisors and Administrators manuals.

Preparing for the ISEE

ERB publishes a manual to help students prepare for this important exam. This book will give you information about, and an opportunity to experience, the kind of test the ISEE really is.
The book begins with general information about the purpose of the ISEE and what it measures. The next section includes sample questions for all levels of the test, with full explanations for choosing the right answer to each question. By answering these questions and reviewing the explanations carefully, you will learn about the exact item types that you will find when you take the actual ISEE.
The cost of the book is $15. All three levels are covered in one book. This includes shipping and handling in the United States. The book is sent through the U.S. Post Office using Priority Mail Service. Please allow 5-7 business days for delivery upon receipt of your order.
You can order What to Expect on the ISEE either on your
fax registration form , or online by clicking here.
